Lot 4766
Crispus, Caesar, 316-326. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.98 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Aquileia, irregular mint, after 322. IVL CRIS-NS NOB C Laureate head of Crispus to right. Rev. D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG / AQP around wreath containing VOT / X in two lines flanked by palm fronds. Cf. RIC 104-6 (for prototype). Flan crack and with some weakness, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This 'barbarous' imitation is a mule, combining an obverse for Crispus (copying RIC 106 [Aquileia]) with a reverse for Constantine I. The reverse itself is also a mule since the outer legend refers to Constantine I but the vota to the Caesars.
